Charlotte PACE Race Brings in Record Numbers for First-Year Event

Over 575 participants turn out in largest first year PACE Race

(CHARLOTTE, NC) - Over 575 participants turned out Saturday for the Charlotte PACE Race - the largest first year PACE Race event to date.

With great running weather and a popular course in Charlotte, runners of all experience levels participated to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer.

"We're very pleased with all aspects of this year's race," said Tim Rhodes, Charlotte PACE Race director. "The great turnout showed just how important it is to raise awareness about prostate cancer - getting checked early can save your life."

Top finishers in the 5K are:

Charlotte PACE Race - Open Men
Justin Ratike - 15:58
Robert Marchinko - 16:04
Robert Miller - 16:21
Charlotte PACE Race - Open Women
Luanne Coulter - 18:27
Suzanne Clemmer - 18:36
Cathy Grable - 19:06

"The inaugural Charlotte PACE Race was an overwhelming success," said Mandy Deas, PACE Race Series Director. "We look forward to the remainder of the series being as successful as Charlotte and then coming back to Charlotte in 2005 with double the participants."

More than 190,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, second only to skin cancer among males. When caught early, prostate cancer is among the most treatable forms of the disease. That is why screening is crucial - and why PACE is looking to reach people nationwide.

The PACE Race series kicked off June 20 in Pittsburgh, PA and ends November 20 in Tampa, FL and Atlanta, GA. The PACE Race Series is presented by Aventis and supported by the Prostate Cancer Education Council, PowerBar, Propel, Madhava, and Kettle Chips.
